The Point System in Florida
When you get points on your license, they will stay on your license for a period of 3 years. If you get 12 points within a 12 month period, you will get a 30 day license suspension. If you get 18 points within an 18 month period, you will face a 90 day suspension. If you get 24 points within 3 years, expect to lose your driver's license for an entire year. One incident can lead to multiple citations and many points. Leaving the scene with property damage will mean 6 points on your license. Excessive speed in violation of law that resulted in a crash is 6 points. Reckless driving or other criminal traffic violations, termed "willful and wanton" means 4 points. There are many other serious criminal traffic violations that could lead to penalties, loss of driver's license as well as requirements to attend a Basic Driver's Improvement Course. If you fail to complete the course within the time allotted, you will have your license suspended.
